Our last day in Saint Malo, a nice town for a short break. It's main occupations are sailing, fishing and biscuits, not surprising really when you consider it has a nice sheltered harbour, we have no idea about the biscuits, there are lots of shops selling them but those we have eaten are not great. Most days there are big racing trimarans out in the bay presumably practicing for a future race although the big event is the Route du Rhum a race held every four years which is a race for single handed yachts from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe, a distance of 3,500 miles. The races appeal is that it is open to anyone so the Ellen McArthurs of this world (she won the monohull class in the 2002 race) compete against rank amateurs who just like the fun of sailing 3500 miles on their own. All the boats start at the same time, there were 120 boats in the last event in 2022 so quite a spectacle.
Fishing: All the restaurants seem to concentrate on crabs, mussels and oysters none of which Gill and I are particularly keen on. We are right at the end of the scallop season and we did not see any on menus so presumably the fishermen aren't catching them at the moment. The crab boat where the fisherman is holding two crabs was huge and a large van was fully loaded with its catch. We have seen crabs in the local shops priced at 8€ each which seems cheap to us even though we won't be buying any.
Our best ever Indian meal was in the Black Chapati in Brighton whose chef was French so when we saw an Indian restaurant in St Malo we were hopeful of a repeat gourmet experience. Chicken Tikka Masala on the menu did not lift our expectations but it was a very good meal, better than several of the French ones we have had so not a disappointment. I just looked up the Black Chapati and it closed long ago so no need to visit Brighton again.
The picture at the top of the page is of the next bay along the coast which we walked to today for a filling lunch before walking back again. All the bays seem to have good sand and plenty of wind and whilst it has been dry the temperature has been a little on the cool side.
We are back on the ferry home tomorrow, staying with Peter and Jane on Sunday night ready to start planning the next holiday - London in a weeks time, lets hope the weather is dry as it is London Open Gardens weekend.
