Now the sun is shining again the beach has been re-colonised by buskers some of whom sleep on the beach (not sure what they did in the storm). They practice their skills (picture above from last night), play music and hope that some tourists will put a penny in the hat, not a great way to earn a living when all the tourists have gone.
I was wrong, the 53m€ mentioned last week was not a waste of money but a great investment; as soon as the sun returned all the local children who got new bikes, scooters or radio controlled cars for Christmas were out in force using the nice smooth tarmac.
We also discovered that in 2019 there was a large Gay Pride festival held here, the site is ideal as the entrance can be closed off, huge concrete walls stop non paying intruders and the flat tarmac is ideal for building stages on. If only such a facility was available for the Michaelmas Fair.
How could I not have seen such a benefit to the community, 53m€ well spent!
The picture above taken today shows the view from our village on the coast where it was 20c+ towards the mountains covered in snow!
On Saturday we did a good walk which was at about 4,000ft, so below the snow. On Sunday we had intended to go up to the telescopes above 7,000ft and photograph us throwing snowballs in sympathy with those of you at home but the police had closed the road so we will have to leave that for another day.
So we looked for an alternative and found one close by which the guidebook writer, who is normally quite matter of fact in his description of the walks, became quite lyrical;
“Tunnelling under a tangle of tall, thin chestnut and laurel, carpeted with dead leaves, lined with large fern and mossy boulders, and scored with birdsong, this path is a sylvan paradise that ought to be celebrated as the islands better known routes, but it is at present gloriously neglected.”
Well with a description like that we cried “To the Woods”. It was a very good, we didn’t get lost and only met a few other people.
We are off cycling tomorrow (fancy electric mountain bikes). Not sure what we will do after that although we will probably return to the big city, Santa Cruz, on Sunday as we will have exhuasted all the bars and restuarants in Tazacorte by then.
