On Tuesday and Wednesday we did two more walks, Tuesdays was through a bamboo forest to a nice waterfall and Wednesdays walk was great, so good we did it twice!
The plan was to drive up to the top of the valley which is at 900m, climb onto a ridge and then walk along the top until just above our house dropping down steeply into Valle Gran Rey. We then intended to catch a taxi or bus back up the hill to collect the car.
The walk was so good we had taken 45 pictures by the time we reached the end of the ridge (picture of me contemplating the descent). Rather than tackle the hill we turned round and did it all again walking back up to the car, taking another 45 pictures and turning a six mile walk into ten. The views are shown in the pictures at the top and bottom of the page.
The climate in La Gomera is a little strange. Where we are on the coast today (Thursday) it was 24c and sunny, up in the hills it was 12c and damp bordering on wet.
So we abandoned todays planned walk and made for the tourist hotspot of the island, a museum dedicated to palm trees. There is not a lot you can say about palm trees, the leaves can be used to make rush mats, the resin can be made into a liqueur and the berries can be fed to pigs but that is about it.
As you can imagine the museum did not detain us for long. One oddity, when you buy land in the Canaries you don’t get the palm trees which are on it, they belong to other individuals who pass them down through their families.
Having done the museum we retired to a bar next to the beach with the intention of having a beer, the beer was good and so was the food we saw being served so we ordered starters (and some wine), that was great so guess what, main courses were ordered (with more wine) and we spent the afternoon by the beach eating and drinking – proper British behaviour - too much food, alcohol and sunshine and being bad mannered I even took a picture of the food, how low can you get?
