Best Place to Live?

The Times have just announced their “100 best places to live in 2024”. Last year Bishop’s Castle was in the list and even better they had a picture of the mural on our house.

This year Bishop’s Castle has been demoted, we are no longer listed but the best place to live in the South is Folkestone so we thought we had better go and check it out on your behalf.

Apart from catching a ferry we have never been to Folkestone before but it is a very agreeable place. Lots of arty shops and galleries, a nice town centre. Some areas were a bit run down but you get the feeling the town is on the way up so they won't be scruffy for long.

There is a really good harbour area where they have recreated the old station and platforms to make a nice promenade with lots of street food vendors (picture below).  The whole area was spotlessly clean despite a great many people eating out of chip papers and polystyrene trays.

I sang the praises of Wetherspoons a couple of days ago (I ought to confess I do have shares in the company) but their pub in Folkestone is amazing.

It was the Salem Chapel built in 1874, it fell into disuse and was restored by Wetherspoons opening in 1997, if you ever find yourself in Folkestone go and have a look.

I am afraid we set off home tomorrow after which I will probably write a "thoughts on Rye" blog before starting to plan our next excursion.
