Head Bangers

Our hotel suite was very nice with a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom but instead of being called "The Wool Suite" it should be know as "The Headbangers".  Why, because as you can see in the photograph the doorway into the bathroom not only has a very low (5ft) top there is also a beam across the floor making it a trip hazard.
For those of us the wrong side of 70 a visit to the toilet in the middle of the night is normally required especially after a nice dinner, wine and the odd G&T, in the dark trying not to wake the other half this becomes a highly risky manoeuvre (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - remember them?). Miraculously neither of us bumped our heads but I didn't get much sleep worrying about it.

How on earth they were allowed to use it I have no idea, anything like that in The Porch House would have fallen foul of the Building Inspector.

Anyone who has read The Severn Way Unplanned (get your copy now on Amazon) will know the Severn floods many times each year.  This makes parking in town over a couple of days a very risky business as several of the car parks suddenly become submerged.

Our friends Liz and Dave had a weekend in London a couple of years ago and on the way home on the train saw a picture on the front page of the Sun of their vans roof, all that was showing in the 5ft of water!  We took the precaution (and expense) of parking in a multi story car park so as to keep our tyres dry.

As mentioned yesterday today we knocked off another National Trust property in our campaign to "save" as much money as possible from our years membership. I say "save" as we have been before and probably paid the £17.50 each entry fee but as Attingham House is close to Shrewsbury we thought we would visit again.  It is a grand house although the National Trust has many similar houses and tend to tell the same story's in each.  The banner shows the plates at the servants dining table with their names, job title and the work they did.  The lowest paid employee was paid 8 guineas a year, about £1,500 at todays money but she did live for free, and of course she would not need to pay mobile phone charges.

I expect the lady cooking in the picture is paid a little more than that, she was making fruit cake, she might be dressed in traditional clothing but she showed us a nice modern oven hidden in the cast iron range, no shovelling coal for her.

We are now back home having a very enjoyable weekend, it shows you don't need to travel long distances to have a nice break although a bit more sunshine would have made it better.
