Greetings from Pucon, a town which seems on a different planet to the rest of the Lake District. It's main claim to fame is the Villarrica volcano which occasionally erupts but for most of the time looks good in photographs. There is also a lake, some fast flowing rivers and in season, plenty of snow so the town has developed as the activity centre of the lakes. There are lots of touts offering white water rafting, jet skiing, walks up the volcano (this requires getting up at 4am, no thanks) and soaks in thermal pools.
The town centre is full of shopping opportunities from all the usual brands you get the world over together with lots of bars and restaurants. All round the lake there are apartment blocks which we assume are aimed at retirees. From the tone of this you can probably gather it is not somewhere we warm to however we have struck lucky again with the hotel. It is a mile out of town in it's own beautiful gardens which drop down to the lake, it is a 1960's “modern” building with lots of concrete, the queen stayed here in 1968, I suspect at the time it was the fanciest and architecturally most important building in Chile, they seem to have changed the sheets since then but not much else.
You can see the hotel in the picture at the top of this page, we have just had a very nice meal on the balcony you can see although of course it was dark at the time. The gardens are lovely, there are humming birds (we assume that's what they are, small things which hover taking nectar from the flowers), parakeets flying overhead, stunning views all around and what are the two 30 year olds doing? Texting their mates and ignoring each other and the surroundings!
Tomorrow we head up north, not sure how far but over the next few days we need to knock off 600 miles.
