Having been brought up in London when we visit we look for new things to do or special exhibitions. Today we headed south of the river, something as a north Londoner I regarded as beyond the pale, in particular to visit the Old Operating Theatre, a museum dedicated to medical matters and "Larking", an exhibition about scavenging along the Thames which was on in Southwark Cathedral, we were looking forward to both.
I would not want to accuse a venerable religious institution of fraud but I don't consider three small cabinets shown opposite as an "exhibition", a huge disappointment however the Old Operating Theatre was great. It is linked to St Thomas's hospital and, apart from the operating theatre itself (pictured above), it has an interesting collection of medical instruments, medicines and descriptions of the techniques used in the last 400 years.
We also had an enjoyable couple of hours in Tate Modern. Like all modern art some is really good and thought provoking and others are just plain odd.
One artist called Bram Bogart who trained as a painter and decorator was obviously not great at plastering (about as good as me) so he took up art.
His "art" is shown opposite, I could have done that!
Tomorrow we are off to the British Museum and then will climb a hill and eat dinner in the clouds. Watch this space for news.
