Today it was nice and warm and sunny down on the coast so we drove up to the top of a mountain where it was cold and damp!
It was a little over 3000ft up and full of German hikers, we are not sure where they all come from (I know Germany) but most of them seem to be on organised trips a minibus load at a time doing the main walking routes on the island. It was as crowded as Snowdon on a bank holiday weekend.
The target for us as well as all these walkers are a couple of spectacular waterfalls but one benefit of so many people is that a very nice coffee shop has been set up in the forest providing walkers with huge slabs of chocolate brownie and excellent coffee at very reasonable prices. We have been surprised at the cost of eating out, yesterday I bought two cappuccinos and thought the cafe had made a mistake, they were just over £1 each!
Once our walk was out of the way we retired to a nice restaurant overlooking a beach for a late Sunday lunch and very nice it was too, coffee stops, cake, lunch - this is the life.
There are also lots of curious statues, one we came across a couple of days ago had a number of large rocks on two lines of pedestals, no explanation board so we have no idea what it is supposed to represent but we could not resist taking a picture of Gill showing off her strength.
Below is a small selection of heads which are set into the wall of a house. The heads are life sized and are of anyone who was prepared to be modelled, tourists and locals alike, a bit strange but quite effective.
