Day 1 - Porto

We arrived in Porto last night after an uneventful journey courtesy of easyJet with their new "screw the hand baggage customers" policy of forcing you to buy premium seats if you want to take a bag on board.

You may be pleased to know it is raining so we won't be dining alfresco any time soon, a bit of a shame as it is warm enough, just wet.

This morning we did a walking tour of the city taking in all the "must see" sights including the railway station (picture left) and the famous bridge.  Eiffel built an iron bridge which looks very similar down stream and then one of his followers designed and built the one shown above in the same style but with the extra walkway below.  It is over 130 years old and is still strong enough to carry metro trains along the top.

A horrid effigy designed to frighten small children into believing in God in the Sao Francisco church which has 450lbs of gold in the walls and ceilings, to say it is over the top would be something of an understatement.

Tomorrow is Gills birthday so I suspect we will have a lazy day visiting a Port merchant for a few samples followed by a long lunch.  In the evening we are booked into a swanky restaurant,  the only snag is they only have a table available at 9.30, old folks like us are normally in bed by then.
