Having spent seven weeks on holiday in Canada our expectations on costs and food quality have been corrupted. We have been amazed at how cheap eating out in Portugal is and the quality of the food, by comparison to Canada it is half the price and the quality is good, last nights meal was the best we have had in a long time and “only” cost £120 despite drinking quite a bit and having puds. In practice it is not much different to the UK but somehow we had adjusted our expectations. We also realised that another difference is there are very few fatties, not just the Portuguese but also amongst the tourists, it seems fat people don’t come to Porto, perhaps all the hills put them off. I did not notice any weight restrictions at the airport, I have often thought the cheap airlines should to charge passengers by the kg, after all they charge for baggage.
Today I had a bit of a disappointment, I was planning to visit the Transport and Communications museum which supposedly has a big section on telecommunications so I was looking forward to new material for the second edition of “It Will Never Catch On” (still available on Amazon – buy your copy now).
It was closed this morning but the sign said it opened at 3pm. I can’t imagine why Gill decided to give it a miss but I was excitedly at the door at 3pm to discover all the exhibits have been removed and all they had was a display of the vehicles used by the King and then the President. A great disappointment.
We did however have a nice walk round the city in the sunshine and visited a slightly eclectic museum in an old house which despite having very few exhibits displayed them very well. The city is full of students dressed either in gowns, presumably about to celebrate graduation, and others dressed in yellow, blue or red tin cans. Apparently it is some sort of festival which is normally held in May but I guess it was delayed. The different colours represent the different faculties, they process through the town and then get plastered, we might be in for some boisterous behavior his evening.
