The last day had to come sometime

On our last day we had coffee overlooking the strait to mainland Italy (picture above) and then did a last castle followed by a long drive to Palermo airport for the flight home.
Thoughts on Sicily; it is an interesting island, neither of us know much about Italy so it is hard to judge if it is typical but as mentioned a few days ago the infrastructure seems scruffy and run down. When things don't work people just shrug their shoulders and say " This is Italy, what do you expect". The ancient sites (600 BC to 400 AD) are impressive, everywhere else seems to have been built between 1700 and 1750 on account of a massive earthquake which seems to have destroyed everything else so we became a little satiated with baroque architecture.

Many of the towns have real character, Ortygia (the old bit of Syracuse), Enna and Castellammare del Golfo were great, Palermo and Catania were too big and choked with traffic, Taormina was overrun with tourists.

Except one hotel all the accommodation was booked through booking.com a day or two in advance and they all were as advertised, our apartment in Ortygia was a real gem and the hotel in Castellammare was also great. The only poor accommodation was the one picked on spec walking round the town.
It was a very enjoyable two weeks, we probably would not go back to Sicily as there are plenty of other places to tick off our list but we are pleased we went.
