Whilst we have been using the sat nav we have also tried to follow the road signs. These for some strange reason are written in Italian and seem to rather inconsistant. For example yesterday we were following nice brown "Tourist Attraction" signs to the mosaics when suddenly they changed to small red ones. Today we decided to drive up to Taormina, one of the most popular sites on the island, this involved going on a toll road.
Going there the signs were unclear so I drove through the wrong toll gate, did not collect a ticket and in the end had to plea ignorance to a nice lady at the far end.
On the way back we followed the signs to Caterina (where we are staying), went through the booth, collected a ticket and then discovered the road south was closed for road works, we were then stuck on the motorway for 13km north, then 13km back again, this time the woman collecting the money just shrugged her shoulders and still insisted I pay, with a line of cars behind me and no Italian for "this is why we are leaving the EU" I was not in a strong position.
We were intending to climb Mount Etna as part of my altitude training for Everest but the cloud was so low there was little point and I doubt if the cable car would have been running.
So Taormina seemed a good alternative, it was a slightly prettier town than Enna but it was heaving with tourists all peering into the shops selling designer gear and / or tourist crap. I dread to think what it would be like at the height of the season.
The most interesting part of the town was the theatre. It was built when the Greek influence was strong however the Romans rebuilt it in the 3rd century AD with 5,000 seats for gladiator events
