Greetings from Cavtat (pronounced savtat) which we spent today exploring. Clearly it is an up market resort as Roman Abramovich has parked his boat in the middle of the bay although we have not noticed him in any of the bars and restaurants we have visited, perhaps he wears a disguise.
His boat, which supposedly cost £480m, has an odd extension on the back, it gives us the feeling that whilst it was being built another oligarch launched a bigger one so he had the extra bit added so his was longer.
This was our only rest day as after we explored the hotel grounds (which are extensive) and then the three bays around which the town is built we booked activities for the next four days after which we have to set off home.
I have always been rather critical of package holidays (perhaps a bit of a snob) but this one has worked out very well. The flight was good and when we arrived at Dubrovnik airport instead of us all being piled onto a big coach which does a mystery tour round all the hotels there were seven or eight minibuses.
Each just served one or two hotels so the time between landing and getting to the hotel was very short. Another big plus for Jet2.
The hotel is huge but fine, the room is large, the bathroom has a bath as well as a shower and the breakfasts ok. There are two salt water swimming pools which Gill has tested and enjoyed. We did try the restaurant for dinner last night as it was raining, we won’t do that again as the main restaurant (where full boarders eat) did not look good and the posh restaurant was over priced for what we had. Having captive victims (customers) the hotel thinks it needs to provide entertainment. Last nights guitarist/singer with his girlfriend on cello were awful, tonight when we past the bar sounded equally bad, why do they bother?
There is one snag with eating out – 131 steps, the climb up to the hotel from the seafront where all the restaurants are, not great after a large meal and a bottle of wine.
Tomorrow we are hiring a car so can get out and about - boring details will be posted when we get back.
