Day 8 - A nice surprise and no rain

It was forecast to rain today so we saved a museum visit in order to keep dry. In practice it did not rain, we understand from the news it has been a bit wet and windy at home, it is dry and a comfortable 22 degrees here at the moment.

The biggest town on the island is called Argostoli which has a sheltered harbour and a nice pedestrian area next to the water where trendy people such as ourselves can promenade, drink frappe in the fancy cafes and watch the world go by.

So what are all the people watching in the picture? Sea turtles, there were lots of them, they come in to feed on the fish guts which the fishermen discard. Each turtle is about the size of a bag of cement and come in very close to the shore so tourists like ourselves can take hundreds of blurry photographs although as you can see above one of Gills came out OK.

So what about the museum I hear you ask - it was very interesting in a low key way. It had a great deal on the earthquake which flattened the town in August 1953, almost nothing was left standing but perhaps more interesting were pictures of the relief efforts, rows of Red Cross tents, portable shelters, sorting out reusable building materials from the rubble and the huge rebuilding effort using reinforced concrete.

On the left above is the harbourside after the earthquake and on the right the same area today. They have laid a pattern of zig zag cobbles to represent the cracks which appeared during the earthquake. Regrettably tomorrow is our last full day, we have done most of the sights we wanted to visit except the very north of the island, somewhere we might drive up to so we can say we have done everything. A full report will be posted in due course.
