Actually not much playing although with the nice sunny weather the Caterham has had a few blasts. But what I don't do is eat mange tout, broccoli or anything else which I don't like and today as I drove down south I stopped at Gonzila's, a canal boat cafe in Braunston which does fantastic, traditional, unhealthy food. Judging by the counter built over the boat I don't suppose it ever moves, there is a nice garden where you can eat your full monty breakfasts in the sunshine, there are only a couple of seats in the boat so not somewhere to go on a wet day.
Four years ago we had an interesting afternoon at Bletchley Park where the code breakers cracked the German Enigma code during WWII. Next door to the Enigma museum is the Museum of Computing but as luck (or the Lucas curse) would have it the museum was closed on the day we were there.
As I am driving down to London to pick a weary traveler from Heathrow I decided to have a couple of days down south and in particular a day paying homage to Tommy Flowers, the GPO engineer who built the first electronic computer. I suspect Gill will be very relived that she will not now be dragged round as it was on my "must visit" list.
The prospect of a night in Milton Keynes (which is where the museum is) did not fill me with excitement so I am staying in the Bull Inn in Olney a few miles away. It is a nice town but is blighted by a busy main road which goes straight through the centre.
Olney's claim to fame is that it was the home of a chap called John Newton, a former slave trader turned Anglican priest who, 251 years ago, wrote the song Amazing Grace. The only other item of interest I can find about the town is it has a Pancake Race, it was first run in 1445 so perhaps the oldest but as the beginning of Lent was some time ago I will not witness this historical event (the picture was stolen from the web). Perhaps I will be offered pancakes with my dinner, preferably freshly cooked, not left over from the race.
So tomorrow will be a geeky day admiring the wonders of 1940 computing, Gill doesn't know what she is missing and probably doesn't care.
