They even have red telephone boxes but none seem to have phones in them.

So what did we think of Valletta?

We have both enjoyed our stay in Valletta, whilst there are plenty of tourists it is not over run and it has a cosmopolitan vibe with plenty of young people working and living in the centre. When I booked five nights in a city centre hotel Gill questioned if we would have had enough to do. I suggested we could have one or two days further afield catching a bus or taxi to save the hassle of parking.
In practice we have not managed to do all the sights in the city, of course some were closed as the Lucas curse struck but we only did one church (there are lots of them) and did not get over to the trendy / touristy area of Sliema.

The weather during the day was nice and warm but it was too cold to eat outside in the evenings. On our tour round the Manoel Theatre yesterday the guide said that before the recent introduction of air conditioning it was so hot the theatre was closed during the summer so I suspect in July and August Valletta is somewhere to avoid.

We did have one traditional Maltese meal (octopus followed by rabbit) but most restaurants are Italian although one excellent pizza restaurant would have made an Italian throw up their arms in disgust, there were all sorts of things included which would be an abomination in Italy, like potatoes, fish and egg! Not surprisingly considering the climate there are quite a few Maltese wines which we are thoroughly testing but only one beer, a lager which is ok. We have not had any Maltesers (sorry, I could not resist it).

Great sax player, she only looked about 12 but she is probably in her 20's

Last night we discovered the Vaults of Valletta, a bar we had passed a few times with a drummer and guitarist outside working hard to entertain the locals. Last night they were joined by a little 20 year old girl on the sax and another drummer, it was great and, just like the Vaults, there was even a couple of people sketching the scene.

This morning we caught the ferry over to Gozo and have already done the main site on the island, the Citadel of Victoria (picture at the top of the page taken during our visit and the one below taken from our hotel balcony this evening).  Gozo seems to have a series of hill top towns each with an enormous church in the centre, we will probably be sick of 18th and 19th over the top churches by the end of our visit.
