Forts, BBQ's and Music

On Wednesday we tackled another fort. Most harbours on the British Islands in the West Indies are defended by similar forts with twenty or so cannons covering the harbour entrances with a small barracks for the soldiers and a large solid building which was used as a gunpowder store. They are almost all in very photogenic locations. Fort Barrington defends St John’s harbour and has a wonderful beach below with a large, all inclusive, resort behind it but all beaches in Antigua are public so poor people like us can walk past the flash sun loungers on our way to and from visiting the fort.
The banner picture shows the beach, the fort is on the hill behind.

Just over a week ago we drove up to another fort above where we are staying to take a few photographs of the bay and have a nice lunch, the views are spectacular. The waitress/manager was a very pleasant lady who mentioned they had evening BBQ’s a couple of days a week with live music, they were sold out over Christmas but we could still get a couple of tickets for Thursday night. It seemed like a bit of a sales spiel but we booked and guess what, the place was packed and they were turning people away so we felt quite smug. The BBQ food was good, the views amazing, the steel band played and everyone was having a great time. After an hour the steel band was replaced by a reggae band and the star player was …. the waitress/manager who is a very good base player.

Tonight after dinner we will sit on the dockside outside our hotel with a bottle of wine to see in the New Year. Apparently there will be fireworks which might be fun.
Happy New Year to you all, the next blog post will be in 2022!
