A view from the canal over Abergavenny

Brecon and Monmouth Canal Day 5

Who needs to go to Yosemite to see giant redwoods?  They are alive and well in Wales, this one next to the canal was once part of a grand estate.

After five days of sunshine this evening it started to rain but if the weather forecast is to be believed the sunshine returns tomorrow morning, fingers crossed it does as steering a narrow boat in the rain is not a lot of fun and we will going back up the five locks again.  I might be wrong but I would guess there are fewer Canal Trust volunteers around to help on wet days so we would have to do it all ourselves.

On the rest of the canal network the majority of narrow boats are privately owned and many of their owners belong to the neighbourhood watch brigade who are hostile to people like ourselves who drive hire boats.  Because this canal is so short there are very few private narrow boats and their owners seem friendly and cheerful.  The vast majority of boats are rented, most for either 3 or 4 day breaks or a week.

We did meet a couple with probably the fanciest boat on the canal (pictured), they don't take it anywhere else (that requires shifting it on a lorry).  It must have cost well over £100k yet they only use it for occasional holidays up and down the 36 miles. One of the Canal Trust volunteers told me that all the volunteers were curious to see inside but that no one is allowed in, apparently the carpet is white! Towpaths and lock surrounds are muddy places, carpets are not an ideal floor covering in a canal boat and a white carpet probably the worst you could imagine.

Will we get wet tomorrow- watch this space for a full report.
