Off home via another NT House

We have now checked out of Portmeirion after a very enjoyable few days.  As soon as you turn into the drive for the village the colour and flamboyance hits you, the picture shows the lines of hydrangeas along the drive.  It is a relaxing place to stay once the day trippers have left and anyhow we went out each day so avoided them.

On the way home we stopped at an equally bonkers property.

Penrhyn Castle is one of the largest castles in Britain, it was not built as a real castle to repel the Welsh, most of it was built between 1820 and 1837 as a home for the Pennant family.  Their money came from plantations in the West Indies which was then invested in slate quarries in North Wales which were very profitable. The Castle is huge, way over the top in size and décor,  it is so large one can’t imagine anyone being able to run the place and when it was inherited in 1951 the recipient gave it to the National Trust and was probably relieved they took it on.

So this short break is regrettably over but no matter our next holiday starts in 10 days time - a week on the Brecon Canal, fingers crossed it does not rain.
