See it. Spray it. Sorted. - A poster in an exhibition about graffiti on trains.
Sunday was spent mopping up the museums we have missed on Friday and Saturday, a fairly relaxed day pottering about the city
One site we did not visit was Leicester City football stadium, we had hoped to watch Saturdays game but it was sold out, perhaps a good thing as they lost! Having read a book about their unlikely winning of the Premier League in 2016 I was keen to visit the ground. The club was bought by an Indonesian businessman called Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in 2011 who everyone associated with the famous victory (they were 5000-1 outsiders) said was a really nice man, it is his picture in the centre of the mural above. He is now been elevated to Sainthood by the fans after he died in a helicopter crash when leaving the ground a couple of years ago, his son now owns the club.
We have enjoyed our stay in Leicester, it is an attractive city with many grand Victorian buildings and as it has a ring road the centre is fairly safe for pedestrians apart from the maniac Just Eat, Uber and Deliveroo cyclists. We have never seen such a high concentration of delivery men (we have not spotted a woman rider yet). Is Leicester the Take Away capital of Britain?
The city is very cosmopolitan, many of the local industries (textiles, shoe making and light mechanical manufacture (like typewriters)) were very labour intensive so after the war people from the Commonwealth, particularly Asians, were encouraged to come to work. When Idi Amin kicked the Asians out of Uganda many came to Leicester as there was already a strong Asian community and since then the city has attracted East Europeans among others. One particular street was highlighted a few years ago as the most diverse in Britain with 22 different nationalities living and working there.
We stayed in a Premier Inn, nice room, shame about the one breakfast we risked, but found salvation in an Italian restaurant across the road. It is open 7 days a week, 8am till 11pm uses first rate ingredients which are well cooked. Nothing pretentious and very good value. We have had two dinners, one lunch and three breakfasts there during our stay all of which were excellent, why can’t other restaurants be as good. (It is number one in Trip Advisor for Leicester).
