Tamaduste - A nice low key resort

The view from the restaurant is amazing, shame about the food

Monday 9th

The most famous Canarian is Cesar Manrique, an artist who also designed a number of buildings. Wherever you go in the Canaries you see his colourful paintings, the car hire company we use (CiCar) use his illustrations in all their marketing material and some of the cars are brightly decorated in his style, slightly odd as he died in a car crash.

The most iconic building on El Hierro was designed by him, it hangs onto the side of a mountain with a 3,000ft drop below, a couple we were giving a lift to suggested we stop off and look at the view which was stunning so we foolishly booked into the associated restaurant for lunch today.

It was the worst meal we have ever had in the Canaries and, being such a fantastic location, not the cheapest. I gave them a terrible Trip Advisor review!

An interesting building but Manrique seems to have forgotten to include any heating, they had patio heaters INSIDE as I guess at night in January 3,000ft up it gets quite cold.

On Sunday we did a nice walk along the coast and stopped at a little restaurant close to the beach. It was a very nice light meal. There was a Swedish chap with a pony tail who seemed to help out a little under the direction of the waitress so we assumed he was a student on holiday. As the food was good we went back last night for dinner, it was billed a music night and whilst we were tucking into some very good food the Swedish chap was playing the piano and singing. His piano playing was of the highest order, his singing was not, we had a few cringes. He had a break and wandered round the tables chatting, it turned out he owned the restaurant so was entitled to sing whenever he wanted! His friend who played Spanish guitar very well joined him for the second set and the two of them kept their mouths shut so it was a good evening in the end.

An artist (not Manrique this time) piled up old refrigerators, covered them in cement and made a sculpture, how odd is that?
