After we left the island of Lefkada our first stop today was Paleros, the village Sian worked in when she was in Greece which Gill was keen to show me. It has a nice little fishing harbour and might be a good place for dinner on the evening before we return to the UK as it is near the airport. Next stop was Preveza, a much bigger place but it has some nice little streets (pictured) and is a proper town, not relying on tourists.
We were then planning to visit the Oracle at Dodoma, after all Odysseus spoke highly of it. We were going to ask for predictions about the weather as Greece has had some exceptional storms just lately. Last week, before we arrived, there was a “medicane”, a Mediterranean Hurricane which wrote off a great many sailing boats not far from here and this morning there was a thunderstorm which lasted almost an hour with lightning flashes every few seconds.
That was the plan, but as we left Preveza we stumbled across some Roman walls which in turn led to a small amphitheatre. It was closed but small details don’t stop us, we climbed over the fence and had a great time exploring the tunnels (pictured).
A little further down the road we found the main site which was open so we spent an unexpected couple of hours wandering round some quite impressive ruins.
So we will leave the Oracle until tomorrow or Monday.
We are now staying in a very nice B&B inside the castle walls of Ioannina. Just outside the walls is a picturesque lake on which the coach tourists go for a boat ride, if it stops raining we might join them. The unusual weather is supposed to end on Monday, from then on it is wall to wall sunshine, lets hope so.
