What do you mean you have been here before?

Imagine you have spent ages pouring over guidebooks and maps in order to find the very best places to take your partner. You then carefully plan the route and guide her as she drives up difficult roads. You then leave the car and walk some way up a rather uneven path and finally arrive at the spectacular waterfalls which you hope will impress her only to be told “I have been here before, and there was more water then!”. It turns out that when Gill was visiting Sian when she was working for Mark Warner in Greece they had a trip to Lefkada on her day off.

After that disappointment we explored the rest of the island and Gill was tactful enough to not mention anywhere else she had been to.
We both like the island a great deal and will come back for a longer stay although it may be that being out of season and of course the number of tourists down due to coronavirus means it is nice and quiet. The sea between Lefkada and the mainland is full of smaller islands and being sheltered it is a sailors paradise, there are lots of little fishing villages with a few tavernas in a sheltered bay. Another plus is that there are no sandy beaches which keeps the riff raff away.

The nicest town we found was called Vassiliki which is shown below, it has quite a large harbour aimed at sailing boats and lots of tavernas spread around the harbour.
The hotel we are staying in was selected because it was an easy drive from the airport but we expected it to be in a rather touristy area. In practice it was a great find, the owners are very helpful, the room is spotless and there is a great taverna 5 minutes walk away – perfect.
Tomorrow we are back on the mainland, hope to consult an Oracle and then stay in a castle!

This beach is called Porto Katsiki, no sand but the sea really is that colour.
