The picture above was our last view of the Prespa lake.

When we planned our holiday we wanted to try and avoid any long drives so in order to get from Prespa to Thessalonica we looked for somewhere in between for a night. That place is Edessa, quite a large, not particularly interesting town except for it’s waterfall. The local council have made the most of this natural phenomena, there is a water mill museum, an aquarium, a geology museum, a grotto as well as a plethora of souvenir shops with a waterfall theme. We ignored all these attractions and just had a good look at the waterfall itself which is very impressive even after the summer, I expect in March it will be quite a sight. After getting a bit wet from the spray we retired to a bar in the middle of town to watch the world go by.

Despite being Saturday afternoon the town is quiet, in fact most places we have visited have seemed quiet. In Prevaza, Ioannina, and Kastoria all the cafes and bars seemed to have far fewer people than expected, we have not had difficulty finding somewhere to park. It is hard to tell if this is the impact of corona virus, the recession or just low season but it suits us fine. In the last two hotels we were greeted on arrival with the words “You must be Mr Lucas” so clearly they are not expecting too many customers.

Tomorrow we head further west to Thessalonica for a couple of days. A place I have always pronounced Thessalonica (and my spelling checker agrees with me) but the local signs and maps call it Thessaloniki, to try and get it right I looked up Wikapedia which helpfully says “in English, the city can be called Thessaloniki, Salonika, Thessalonica, Salonica, Thessalonika, Saloniki, Thessalonike, or Thessalonice”. So that’s clear then!
