Thessaloniki

This morning we drove through the cotton fields of Greece. I don’t think I have ever seen cotton growing before, certainly not when it is in flower if that is the right word. There were lots of tractors with huge trailers filled cotton and the verges along the roads looked like they were covered in snow.

We spent the afternoon visiting the White Tower which was built around 1430. It now contains a history of Thessaloniki which whilst well presented was most certainly written by a patriot, Greeks are portrayed as the good guys, nothing is said of their failings and nothing positive is said of the Turks, Germans or Jews who, until 1941 made up a sizeable proportion of the population.

After a well earned beer we then tackled the Archaeological Museum which has some excellent Roman artefacts most of which came from graves including several gold crowns an example of which is shown below.

Last nights accommodation was a slightly pretentious “boutique” hotel, it was a beautifully restored house but they failed to put any sound proofing between the rooms or in the ceiling.
We had a loud snorer in the room next door and the person in the room above seemed to get up and pace around the room for most of the night. We did not get much sleep.

For the next two nights we are in a rather funky hotel in the centre of town, lots of bright colours and unusual furniture, fingers crossed we get some sleep.
