how to build a website for free

The Remoaners are right, we are already suffering from leaving the EU. OAP’s get into the Greek ancient monuments for 4€ instead of 6€ but that only applies to OAP’s from the EU. If the person on the ticket desk realises you are from Britain you don’t get a discount, so we no longer have to lie about our age but do need to pretend to be Irish!
Today we did the sites of Thessaloniki, starting at the top of the hill in the castle and then walking down to the Rotunda and the Roman Agora as well as calling into anything else of interest on route.
The castle was used as the local prison until 1989 and the prison buildings and cells have been left untouched. The main reason for visiting is the excellent view it gives of a not very pretty city (shabby concrete flats mostly, picture above) and to see the Roman walls that surround the city which are quite extensive.

The Rotunda is amazing, it is 1700 years old, is 25m in diameter and the dome is 30m high. It was built as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Galerius, when he was buried elsewhere it was left empty for a few hundred years before being converted to a church.

The arrival of the Turks inevitably resulted in it having a minaret added and being used as a mosque. It has been reconsecrated but I am pleased to say that apart from an altar the space is empty so you get to appreciate the scale of the building. It is not as large as the Parthenon in Rome but when you consider this is an area which gets many earthquakes it shows how good the Romans were at building.

The Roman Agora has an interesting underground shopping mall and an excellent museum describing life in Thessaloniki 2000 years ago. It also has the remains of a communal bath house with a circle of individual baths which were in some sort of steam room.

We have been staying in a great hotel in the middle of town (thecaravan.gr), it has lots of little “men” drawn around the place, the pictures here are from the lift and the sign to the loo.

Tomorrow we head off toward Mount Olympus for a chat with the gods, I might ask them for a little help with Barnet FC, they have not started the season very well.
