We are now established in Skopelos and have spent the last two days driving round the island and exploring all the towns, villages and beaches.
In fact there are very few beaches as the islands mountains drop straight into the sea. The picture opposite of a road covered in trees might look a bit boring but it describes the main difference between the islands, there are many more tall trees so Skopelos is much greener than Alonnisos.
The island has over 360 churches (one is Joe Witness, the rest Greek Orthodox) and all seem to be painted white and are photogenic. As the resident population is 5,000 that is one church per 14 inhabitants assuming they all go to church which I very much doubt.
Two of those below are in Skopelos town, the one on top of the rock is called Ag. Ioannis sto Kastri but is known by all as the "Mamma Mia Chapel" as it featured in the film
Skopelos is not a great place if you are a young man. The culture of the island is Skopelos is of a matrilineal society.
Wealth is passed on via the female line. A couple's house and property remain in the wife's name. This custom is particularly insular as in most other parts of Greece, especially on the mainland the wealth passes down the male line.
Tomorrow we return to Skiathos where we have booked a few nights near a nice beach we spotted two weeks ago, we are not sure what to do after that, it depends on the latest edict from the Transport Secretary which is due by Friday morning.
