Sunday was spent sitting on a very nice beach (the only sandy beach on Alonnosos) with excellent service from waiters who keep you topped up with frappé (theirs was a particularly fine brew with ice cream) and a very good, traditional Greek lunch. I am not normally a beach person but with a good book to read I was sorted and had a very enjoyable day.
In the evening we ate in a local taverna and risked the spinach pie. This is a local delicacy which we had previously been talked out of but being determined explorers we insisted. It was enormous, it filled a 10 inch plate and was 2 inches thick, Popeye would have been defeated and so were we. It was billed as an appetiser! The bit we left is shown opposite.
Alonnosos is famous for monk seals which are very rare so all the tourist shops are full of stuffed seals, fridge magnet seals and T shirts featuring s…. Fishing is banned close to the island which is a marine reserve, apparently the seals are quite large and aggressive but we can’t confirm this as we did not meet any.
Today we have packed up and caught the ferry over to Skopelos, where I booked us a nice appartment with a great view of the harbour (pictured). You may notice that it appears a long way up, Gill was calling me all sorts of names when she realised we had to carry our cases up about 200 ft along a stone path. I don't think she will let me forget it.
Skopelos is the home of Mamma Mia, I have never seen the film so goodness knows what we will find available to tourists. All will be revealed in the next exciting instalment of this blog.
