We arrived at the ferry terminal at about 10am to be told not to come back until 4pm as the ferry was stuck in Barra due to a fault. That enabled us to have a good look round Oban, which is quite a nice place, and then drive a few miles out of town to visit Dunstaffnage Castle (pictured) and the Scottish Association Marine Sciences (SAMS) which specialises in analysing what is happening in the worlds oceans. They have a visitor centre which is aimed at children so suited us fine.
A late lunch in Oban and then onto the ferry. It is a five hour crossing to Barra, we arrived at the hotel in time for last orders. The captain warned us there "might be a bit of a swell", I think he meant it will get rough once we are out in the Atlantic but it was not too bad and the sunset behind Barra as we arrived was very welcoming.
