Saturday 7th December

We have now left our Air BnB and moved into the big city, Santa Cruz. We still can’t get over the lack of hot water in the kitchen of our Air BnB cottage, the place was nicely done up with a new kitchen with a good fridge freezer, and induction hob, extractor hood and new oven (picture left) but you have to boil a kettle to get hot water!

We will not review this place highly which is a shame as in most other respects it was a nice cottage.

On route to the city we stopped at an archaeological site which is not mentioned in any of the guide books nor on Google Maps. The site has a number of caves where the native people used to live before the arrival of the Spanish wiped them out.

They originated from Africa arriving around 2000 years ago presumably sailing in 50 mile hops between the islands as La Palma is the furthest away. You are not allowed onto the site but view it from a very impressive museum which opened in February and does not seem to get any visitors.

We had driven past a few times in the week so decided to pay a visit, there were two very helpful guides and just as we left a family of four arrived. At a guess the museum cost more than a million to build, it seems a bit of a shame.

The car was returned today as parking in the big city is a nightmare and anyhow we will walk everywhere. As I mentioned previously the car was a Fiat 124 Spider Abarth. It looks really good and turns a few heads, the Fiat engineers seem to have spent all the development money on making the noise from the four exhaust pipes sound brilliant, there is a roar when you put your foot down but even better a lovely burble when you brake on the engine. When we first got it we spent ages looking for the button to lower the roof, there is no button, you do it by hand!

The only snag with the car is it is underpowered, on investigation it turns out the car is actually made by Mazda and, despite being the sporty version, it only has a 1400 engine. This may be so that it does not compete with the Mazda MX5. Fiat no longer sell them in the UK, when they did the reviewers said it was a nice car but very expensive for what it was (£30k+). It is a shame as with a 2 litre or more engine it would be a good car for posers like me.
