I know we are old and a bit thick but as we walked through a park on our way into Rugby town centre we both said "Oh look at that egg". Of course it was a rugby ball. It seems that the only thing of merit in the town is its claim to having invented a stupid game with an odd shaped ball (Gill likes rugby, I can't stand it). I had looked up the web before the holiday and found nothing of note, the web was right, there is nothing of note in Rugby
The town centre was a little run down, outside the school there is a statue to a chap called William Webb-Ellis and there is a museum dedicated to the sport but I am pleased to say it was closed.
We made a big mistake when looking for a mooring to visit the town, having missed all the places to stop we had to do a three point turn and go back. No problem as there was a winding hole (a turning space) nearby so we were able turn round and tie up. That was the easy bit, on returning to the boat we were facing the wrong way, we could either go two miles in the wrong direction to another winding hole or reverse 100 yards back to the one we used before.
Reversing a narrow boat is very difficult, the steering is non existent, Gill was dead against such a foolhardy enterprise but I was full of unfounded confidence. The only snag is that the narrow minded neighbourhood watch brigade all get on deck and watch daggers drawn should you dare to touch their boats. You can see they are all muttering "bloody hirers" under ther breath. The bastards don't try to help, they just want you to cock up.
I am pleased to say despite all this I managed to reverse 100 yards and round a bend, I am feeling rather pleased with myself, I am due a big disaster.
We made very good progress today in brilliant sunshire, 15 very flat miles, the only lock only dropped us 6 inches, it is between two canals so is there to stop one canal stealing the others water.
Tomorrow we will visit Nuneaton and then we hit a whole line of locks which we might start tomorrow or save for the next day, fingers crossed it won't be raining.
