Gill and I have been thinking about changing our car. The current BMW is a little too large and whilst it is great having a convertible we of course get the wind in our hair when the Caterham is taken on an outing. We have tried a few smaller cars but most are very underpowered, we want something that could overtake the bus on the Shrewsbury road.
Despite my rude comments about Fiat 500’s we have had on holidays they are nice cars to drive if only they had a bit of oomph so we have been looking at the boy racer version, the Fiat Arbath 500. On a walk through Funchal we spotted one outside a car hire company so we decided to book it. The last couple of days have been quite straight forward driving, a few winding roads and the odd bit of motorway but today we took it for a blast in the snow!
There has been a little snow on the tops of the mountains and the high winds have covered the roads in leaves and debris making them a little treacherous so a good test of the car, the banner above is taken through our windscreen.
We both like the car, it is just the job from a drivers perspective but Gill is worried about our image, she is a 70 year old granny, she probably does not need "go-faster" stripes and four, yes four, exhaust pipes but we might be buying one on our return.
Today we walked from the top of a cliff, picture above, dropping down on a narrow precipitous path to sea level past some spectacular waterfalls, but the really good thing is that a small cable car has been built so that the fishermen and farmers can get up and down the cliff so we were very brave and caught it back up.
It climbs about 1200 feet in one go so quite exciting. We did meet a few Germans walking up the path so they are either mean (the fare was 3€), cowards or stupid but they are certainly fitter than us.
