Before going into the mountains you should of course take precautions, the sign says we should travel in large groups (ignored), that we should take food (ignored) but we did pack woolies just in case the temperature dropped below 25C (it stayed well above). We also declined the opportunity to buy bear spray at $50 a can.
What we should have done is remembered the fly spray as the horse flies were large and hungry and we should have had garlic soup for lunch to help with the altitude (see my Everest blog about garlic soup).
We took the Lake Louise Ski lift up to a height of 7,200 feet where the air is a little thinner and bravely set off in bear country admiring the views. We made a lot of noise to frighten the bears away and Gill had a big stick, we had no close encounters but were soon puffed out.
The views were good despite it being a little hazy and there were plenty of flowers and butterflies.
When planning this trip we had great difficulty finding anywhere to stay in this part of the Rockies. The options were;
1 - Expensive, stay in a motel miles away and drive in each day.
2 - Very Expensive, stay in a very large touristy hotel next to Lake Louise.
3 - Eye wateringly expensive, stay in the Moraine Lake Lodge but at least the price keeps the riff raff away.
We are members of the SKI Club - Spend the Kids Inheritance so we have gone for option 3 and very nice it is too.
We are here for three nights and hope to get two good walks in plus a couple of paddles round the lake as the lodge has canoes for guest use so we can pretend to be Indians and paddle ourselves round a very beautiful lake, probably the most beautiful lake we have ever seen. There will be photographs tomorrow.
