For the last 40 years we have being saying "Lets go to Canada and see Uncle Fred" but somehow we have never got round to it. Now we are retired and have nothing to do all day we have finally organised a trip and are setting off west. It actually proved rather more difficult to arrange than we expected as museums and tourist attractions don't seem to open in Canada until 1st June and then they all close at the end of September so the accommodation is very busy during this short season.
The plan is to fly to Halifax in Nova Scotia where we pick up a car and drive up to Cape Breton Island for a week and then back to Halifax itself for a couple of days in the city. We have booked a mixture of hotels, B&B's and an Air BnB house.
The name Nova Scotia means "New Scotland" so perhaps we can expect lots of midges, bagpipes and bad weather, I do hope not.
We then fly to Calgary, stay with our friends Rosie and Norman for two nights before setting off across the Rockies in a car staying in hotels and B&B's over the course of 11 days finally arriving in Vancouver for some sightseeing.
From Vancouver we cross over to Vancouver Island (where my uncle lives) and have booked a truck with a tent on the roof for 11 nights followed by a couple of nights staying with Fred.
Finally we return to Vancouver and catch the Canadian train which winds its way over the Rockies and across the plains to Toronto where we stay before flying home. The timing seems excellent as we will miss most of the hustings for the new Prime Minister which has been driving us mad for the past few weeks.
