The aim of today was to drive the 300km to Halifax. We drove off Cape Breton island along the causeway which was built in 1955, at the time there were protests against this link primarily as there were a lot of people employed running the ferry's to and fro but once it was build they discovered that the sea did not freeze on one side of the causeway which suddenly gave them a deep water port which was usable throughout the year so the Luddites moved from being ferrymen to dockers.
We hoped that by taking the scenic route along the East Shoreline we would see wonderful scenery, nice little fishing villages and the odd place for a drink and some nice seafood.Well it was nice scenery, On Golden Pond with knobs on but there was not a village, a cafe or restaurant in 100km. The one refreshment stop was a burger van which only did cans of pop, no coffee, very odd.
Nearer Halifax we did find a diner so we did not starve. We also visited another museum, Louisbourg covered the 1700’s, the Bell museum 1890’s but this one was set in 1942 -45 and was really good primarily because they let the visitors pick things up. A copy of the National Geographic published just after the first atomic bombs were dropped with pictures and comment about this new weapon, newspapers published in 1943 extolling the allied progress but the objects I found most astounding was a couple of chain saws. The smaller of the two I could just about pick up, it probably weighed 40lbs, the larger one was beyond me, Canadian lumberjacks must have been very strong, I resisted singing any songs. I assume they had cast iron four stroke engines, my chain saw weighs about 5lbs and is an alloy 2 stroke.
We are now in a very fancy B&B in Halifax run by a very nice couple from Kerry in Ireland, as you can see Mrs Lucas has tested the bath.
Tomorrow we will explore the city.
