As we were likely to be camping for the next few nights I treated Mrs Lucas to a slap up meal in the number one restaurant in Vancouver (according to Trip Advisor). My prejudice showed in the choice, it was Greek but unusually for a good restaurant it was in a high rise hotel. It was the best meal so far and not the most expensive. But what I cannot get my head round is the North American idea of any leftovers being put in a “doggy bag” to take home. This being a posh restaurant had big carrier bags! Surely you don’t want people leaving your restaurant with doggy bags, it implies your food is only fit for dogs. Picture taken surreptitiously of a couple at the next table.
Today we were up early to catch the ferry to Vancouver Island, the snag is the ferry terminal is 25 miles outside the city, we had intended to catch a taxi the whole way but a lady we met a few days ago told us to take the metro out of the city and just use a taxi for the last 10 miles.
So that’s what we did except when we arrived at the last station in plenty of time there were no taxi’s nor any signs giving taxi companies numbers – panic!
A kind man suggested we go back three stops and try there, success and we caught the ferry with about 20 minutes to spare.
We were met at the port in Vancouver Island by Sam from Wilderness Safari’s with our truck. It took an hour for him to explain how everything works which, being old people, we promptly forgot so spent a long time setting everything up when we finally reached our camp site. It is a very well appointed truck, much better than those we have hired in Africa with lots of clever draws in the back so Gill can find all the utensils whilst I drink beer.
We then reported to my uncle Fred and his daughter and granddaughter for coffee and cake so at least they could see we were clean, I think when we go and stay with them in a week or so we might be a bit scruffier after our camping in the wilds.
Whilst Vancouver reminded us of Sydney, Pachena Bay where we are camping for two nights is like San Francisco, it has a nice sandy beach but it is foggy (see pictures) we are concerned that we might not get much sleep because of the fog horn which is sounding every few minutes.
We are very much out in the backwoods so updating the blog might be rather infrequent, I bet you can't wait.
