Days 5 & 6 - Flowers, Sleepy Towns, a ferry ride and Greek politics.

On Monday we drove over the mountains to Poros, a very sleepy little town which comes to life a couple of times a day when the ferry from the mainland arrives.

All the drivers leaving the ferry are on a mission to get somewhere else on the island as soon as they arrive so Poros remains sleepy. That suited us fine as we had excellent frappés for elevenses (the best variety with ice cream not milk), a walk round the harbour and then a slow lunch. Of course we were outside in the sunshine overlooking a calm turquoise sea the whole time.

We had hoped to visit some Mycenaean tombs but the Lucas curse struck again, the site was closed for some reason so that has spared you boring information about life on the island in 1300BC.

Provided it does not rain May is the best time to visit Greece, there are not too many tourists and all the fields are full of flowers, they suddenly blossom in the warm sun, by mid June the sun will be too strong, the ground becomes brown and the flowers disappear for another year.

Today (Tuesday) we explored the north west of the island in particular a town called Lixouri.  Jet2 did not have any accommodation there when we booked our holiday and  we have discovered why, it is a rather run down area. A bit strange as everywhere else on the island is beautiful but somehow, despite the same turquoise sea and mountain backdrop everywhere in this area seemed drab and sad.

We drove there along a very roundabout route getting stuck behind a Greek Orthodox procession with the devotees carrying a sacred icon along a road where people had thrown petals.  A policeman ordered me to stop whilst one of the helpers was waving me forward, no one obeys the police in Greece so nor did I driving on through the petals. To avoid being arrested on the way back we caught the ferry across the bay, a bargain at 9€ for the car and two passengers.

I ought to be careful what I write as Greece came last among EU countries in the Reporters Without Borders 2023 World Press Freedom Index published last week. Greece now ranks 107th, right behind Qatar and Thailand, apparently there is a great deal of pressure put on the press and writers and the oppositions phones are bugged.  The country has a general election in two weeks time but surprisingly there do not seem to be any posters or campaigning going on in Kefalonia.  In the 90's when I was working in Greece election time was a bit manic with the parties seemingly partying all the time to drum up support.  Perhaps after all the trouble with bail outs and threats to and from the EU the voters have become jaded, in theory voting is compulsory although Wikipedia says the rules are never enforced - very Greek.
