Most people, including ourselves on our last visit, get to La Palma by flying to Tenerife and catching the ferry between the islands. This was what we intended to do this time but for some reason, perhaps I was bored I looked more closely at the costs and the option of flying. The ferry company (Fred Olsen) charge an exorbitant €106 each for foot passengers to sail the 80 miles. Binter airways charge €40 each for the same trip the only snag is that they use the other Tenerife airport.
So we hired a "one way car" at the airport for €41 and drove up to the other airport where we are staying overnight before flying over to La Palma tomorrow rather than catching a bus to the ferry port and staying in a hotel there. So €121 rather than €212. What is even better there is a flight every hour and the journey only takes 30mins rather than 2 hours.
We recently bought a 595 Abarth which is the boy racer version of a Fiat 500. Being sensitive to the needs of the planet we did consider an electric version but decided against it on the grounds of cost (it was £5000 more). So imagine our excitement at the chance to try out an electric Fiat 500 for this short, 42 mile journey.
It accelerates as well as the Abarth once you get used to its quirks (like stopping if you take your foot off the accelerator going down steep hills) it is very good. The only problem is range, the man who gave it too us said it would do 290km on a full charge, the indicator said it was OK for 260km at the start but we only drove 60km yet used up 140km of range. I think I would worry if I was going on a long journey or, God forbid, want to use the windscreen wipers.
