Plenty of water in the River Swale

Monday 18th December

Today was spent doing the sights of down town Richmond.  Actually it is up town as the streets all lead up to the castle and market place which are at the top of a very steep hill.  There are not many fatties in Richmond, all the fast food outlets require quite a climb to reach them, perhaps that is the answer to the obesity crisis, only allow take away's at the top of hills with no parking.  There is a famous song about the climb "The Lass of Richmond Hill" written in 1789, the composer (Leonard McNally) fell in love with a girl whose family lived in a house behind where the picture left was taken. Her father did not approve of McNally so they eloped to get married.

The town is very nice with lots of independent shops and about ten restaurants a number of which we hope to try.  There is also a gallery belonging to an artist called Lucy Pittaway who has done a lovely picture of the Sycamore Gap Tree which alas is no more.  I took the photo through the gallery window hence the blobs of "snow".  There are not any supermarkets or petrol stations, for boring things  like that you have to drive to Catterick Garrison about four miles away which is a huge military housing estate, no fancy shops there.

Of course being December the local museums are closed as is the Castle but we might be able to go round it on Saturday, it is quite impressive, picture below.

I have just had an email from Catterick racecourse to say the going is "Good to soft" not sure if that describes the lunch or is something technical about the racing - all will be revealed tomorrow.
