I mentioned that after much difficulty I had invested a small fortune in a William Hill account so Mrs Lucas and I could place bets from the comfort of our lunch table. I thought it was all sorted – Oh no it wasn’t – Yesterday I had to send them pictures of my driving licence and debit card as well as a current utility bill. That I thought would be easy but then the machine came back a few hours later to say I had not signed my debit card. Oh yes I had -(getting into the panto mode) it is just very faint – who looks at the signature strip? When in conversation with their “Live Chat” with a not very live bot, instead of saying “Thank You” it used “Awesome”, an awful expression, you would think a computer would know better.
I eventually talked to a real person who spoke properly and after my getting very cross it was all sorted.
We then had to place our bets using important parameters such as the name of the horse, the appearance of the jockey and avoiding one which had recently had "wind surgery"! Perhaps not a horse to get too close behind.
In the first race there were only five runners and the favorite, who had led from the start, ran off and sulked in a corner while the other horses charged past resulting in my winning £70 on the very first race. This is why I am smiling in the picture whilst Gill is reflecting on her £10 loss. I did not win any more bets but Gill did twice so in the end we finished £40 richer and William Hill, after all the aggravation, were £40 out of pocket. It was a great day out but I don't think we will risk another outing, I can't see us being as lucky again.
Off to a museum tomorrow in the rain, stand by for the next exciting report.
