This morning was spent in the Green Howard’s Regimental museum in the centre of Richmond. Normally I find military museums a bit dull but this one was well laid out and interesting. It might be my misconception but the regiment did seem to lose a lot of battles or at least retreated more than winning. Why are they called the Green Howards? Because in the 18th Century each regiment took the name of their Colonel, there were two Howard’s with their own regiment so this one added “Green” as they had green uniforms. They no longer exist and are part of the Yorkshire regiment.
They fought in most wars over the past 200 years including the Crimea, Boer, WW1 & II, Malaya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland. Of course there were lots of uniforms and medals on display but also many smaller items which were more interesting.
Above is a leaflet dropped by the Germans in Italy after the Italian surrender when a great many British soldiers were on the run. On the right is a German clockwork mechanism used to set off a land mine, it is beautifully made, one wonders why they put so much effort into something which was to be used once.
Richmond Railway Station has been closed since 1969 but the building has been restored and now houses a three screen cinema, an art gallery, some artisan shops and a large tea room where we had a very nice afternoon tea and are now feeling a bit bloated.
Richmond has a good selection of food shops, there are two nice butchers, an amazing pie shop, several delicatessens, a proper greengrocers, two artisan ice cream parlours as well as a dozen restaurants and cafes. We are doing our best to support them during our stay, we might need to go on a diet when we get home.
Tomorrow we will visit one, possibly two castles in the rain!
