The Lighthouse Museum

The building is known by it's nick name of "The Lighthouse" on account of the tower you can see in the picture above.  It was the first large building designed by Rennie Machintosh however he was only the trainee in the architectural practice so his bosses got the credit at the time.

The building was built to be the printing works for a Glasgow newspaper who were very worried about fire so the tower was a water tower which could quickly release water through a sprinkler system.

It is now a very interesting museum which kept Gill and I entertained for three hours

In fact during his lifetime Mackintosh did not become famous and was regarded as an awkward bugger to deal with. He wanted total control of all aspects of the work so not only the building itself but the decoration, furniture and, in the case of the tea rooms he designed, the staff uniforms, the menu layout and the flower arranging! Not what you expect your architect to deal with.

He was married and a great deal of the design work was done by his wife Margaret although she did not get the credit for this. It was not until 1970 that his work was properly appreciated and, as his designs are out of copyright, greatly copied.

Gill is very keen on his work so over the next few days we will visit a number of his creations and will bore you all all sorts of useless information about him.
