This morning we caught the 10am ferry back to the mainland from Trizonia with a couple of Brits from Lancashire who have a yacht which they left moored there last winter and “because of Covid” are leaving it again this year. We met another couple from Scotland doing the same the day before. Neither boat has been taken out for a sail this year.
I don’t understand this, surely being on a boat with no one else is the ideal social distancing, why not spend the whole summer cruising round these wonderful waters (picture above of the Ionian islands).
The Trizonia harbour master is a local politician as well as the owner of our hotel and a taverna. Our British friends pay him in cash and as a result get a “special deal” for mooring all winter – some things in Greece never change.
We drove along the coast and stopped so I could take a picture of the Rio–Antirrio Bridge which is an engineering masterpiece.
Just below us we noticed another interesting bit of engineering, the Castle of Nafpaktos. We cannot resist looking round a castle so we drove into Nafpaktos and looked up Google maps for the entrance. It said it was 29 minutes on foot, we could see the castle just above us so assumed it was another sat nav anomaly and off we went. 30 hot and sweaty minutes later we arrived at a locked entrance gate (pictured). Still, the views were good. Nafpaktos also has a very picturesque harbour so it was a great town to stumble on.
We have now completed the planned full circuit, we should be flying back tonight but instead have another week on Lefkada island.
We have fallen on our feet and have a great apartment right in the middle of Vasiliki but more about that on another day, as you can see Gill is settling into island life.
